GRANTS The trustees of Abbie’s Fund are delighted to
announce that the first ever research grants from Abbie’s Fund have recently
been awarded to two very worthy projects. The first was to Louis Chesler of the
Institute of Cancer Research based at The
Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton for £50,000 over 2 years to develop a blood
test to provide early
diagnosis and monitoring of neuroblastoma. This test will make detection of
the disease and the progress of treatment significantly easier to detect and
monitor. It will also have a dramatic impact on the patient on a day to day
basis as it will reduce the number of scans and tests which for young
children can be scary, painful and often require general anaesthesia. The second was to Paul Sondel of the
University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA, for $29,523 over 1 year to research
the mechanism which makes a particular style of antibody therapy particularly
effective at mopping up small amounts of residual disease. It is these minute
levels of disease remaining undetected at the end of treatment that often
ultimately lead to relapse and antibody therapy is one treatment under a lot
of investigation at present to deal with this problem. All applications received were of an extremely
high standard but sadly we received more than we were able to fund at this
time. However the exciting step of
awarding these monies renews our energies and our conviction to work even
harder to raise funds to help make neuroblastoma survivable. APRIL 24th 2008 - SPRING EVENING OF FUN, PAINSHILL
PARK, COBHAM Another
wonderful and hugely successful event held at Painshill Park on a beautiful
spring evening. Simulators, casino games, music, silent auction and much much
more was enjoyed by over 400 people and a staggering £50,000 was raised for
Abbie’s Fund. April 2008 - LONDON MARATHON Another fantastic effort by
Running Dads, (Adrian Potter and Kevin Brooker) and Abbie’s Uncle
Steve running the London Marathon again
in 2008 in memory of Abbie to raise money for the Neuroblastoma Society and Sparks. September 2007 - TREASURE HUNT, PAINSHILL PARK, COBHAM On
Sunday, 23rd September, 50 children and their parents attended a
Treasure Hunt in the beautiful grounds of Painshill Park in aid of ‘Abbie’s
Fund’, which has been set up to raise funds to support research into making
Neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, survivable. The
event was organised to officially launch ‘Abbie’s Fund’ as a charity. The children were all given a helium
balloon with the charity’s logo. Many of the children attached messages of
love addressed to Abbie, who died in September last year of
Neuroblastoma. Messages such as:
‘Abbie I really miss you’; ‘I love you’; ‘we wish you were still here’ all
floated together into the sky. One of
the children was heard to say ‘hopefully Abbie will be able to catch
them’. Abbie was only five years old when
she died of Neuroblastoma, which is the biggest killer of children under
5. These children were mainly from
Glenesk School in East Horsley, where she spent some of the happiest days of
her life. Abbie
won the hearts of hundreds of local people who followed her courageous fight
the end. Abbie was diagnosed with
Adrenal Neuroblastoma when she was 21 months old. She underwent intensive treatment with
induction chemotherapy, high dose chemotherapy, stem cell transplant,
surgery, radiotherapy and Retinoic acid.
She went into remission and was declared free of disease in January
2004. Unfortunately, a relapse was
diagnosed in June 2005 and she had to undergo yet many more months of
chemotherapy, radiotherapy and numerous other invasive and horrendous treatments
to try and rid her of this despicable disease. Abbie’s family and friends were all
devastated when she finally lost her fight for life in September 2006. Abbie’s
Fund Trustees are determined to do their utmost to raise as much money as
they can to help other children who are going through the same dreadful
journey as Abbie. One of Abbie’s
Fund’s key objectives is to raise funds to support research into making
Neuroblastoma survivable and also to look into other areas of innovative
treatment as well as supporting those children already suffering from this
horrendous childhood cancer. Abbie’s

AUTUMN EVENING OF FUN On Wednesday 21st Sept, over 500 people attended a
spectacular ‘Autumn Evening of Fun’ in the stunning grounds of Horsley
Towers, East Horsley, in aid of The Neuroblastoma Society. The use of a marquee set in the beautiful grounds of Horsley
Towers was generously donated as the setting for the event. As people arrived they were greeted with
the sound of jazz music, played by the talented Mark Millington, and the hum
of cars coming from the Ferrari Simulator.
On entering the marquee ticket holders were greeted with a glass of
champagne and canapés and asked to try their luck on the casino tables (with
the chance of winning a holiday), or to browse through over 50 Auction items
and join in the ‘Silent Bid Auction’ by placing their bids. The prizes had been donated by various
sources and included a cricket bat, signed by the entire England Cricket
Team, signed boots and gloves from Jenson Button, a diamond donated by Nicky
Oppenheimer of DeBeers, a football signed by the Chelsea Football Team. The evening continued through until 10:00 pm, during which time
guests had the chance of competing in the ‘Race the Ace’ competition against
Damon Hill, or challenging their own friends on the 8-seater racing
simulator. Entertainment was also provided
by Bobby Davro, who acted as a compere for the night. At 10 o’clock Bobby auctioned off the
highest 5 prizes to the audience with much hilarity and success, pushing
prices to much greater levels. In
total, over £50,000 was raised on the night, with another single donation of
£20,000, which makes a total of over
£70,000. A group of 12 mums organised this whole event within a
tremendously tight 8-week period, having been inspired by the child of one of
the team, 4-year old Abbie.
